WHAT COUNTS
“My food, said Jesus is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work” John 4:34.
On a certain day, Jesus along with his disciples embarked on a journey to Galilee from Judea. They decided to pass through Samaria where he happened to meet a woman of Samaria origin. Tired from a distant journey of trekking, he sat down by the well presumably to refresh and take some rest before proceeding on the journey (4:3-6).
There he met with the Samaritan woman who came to fetch water. Jesus requested some water from her to drink, but the woman noticing that he was a Jew questioned why she should obliged him, seeing that Jews and Samaria had nothing in common. (Vs7-9).
Jesus took advantage of the opportunity and engaged her in a conversation that would lead to her Salvation (Vs 9-30). By this time his disciples had gone into town to buy some food, apparently having been hungry as a result of long, tedious trekking. On their return, to their amazement, their master was deep in conversation with this woman. When he was done talking with her and she left to announce that she had seen the Messiah, his disciples persuaded him to eat something. But Jesus said to them: ” I have food to eat that you know nothing about” (vs 32.)
At that, his disciples wondered amongst themselves if someone had brought him food while they were away. But He opened up and told them that his food is to do the will of him who sent him and to finish his work (vs. 32). That was what counts to him, not food, not personal gratification, nor interest, or ambition. But to do the will of his Father (serving God by any means and at whatever cost, busy winning the lost into God’s kingdom).
As followers of Jesus, this should be what counts to us. Nothing else should matter to us than getting involved in “the kingdom business ” Everything other thing should be secondary.
